Straniero, Winebarger Dice Up Highlanders; Elon Handles Radford

Elon, N.C.- The combination of Nolan Straniero and Owen Winebarger silenced bats and dealt strikeouts in Elon's (7-9) 10-1 Tuesday night win over Radford (7-8). The Elon bats would not be outdone as the Phoenix hung ten runs on the Highlanders and scattered 12 hits in the victory.

Straniero and Winebarger combined to throw all nine innings as Straniero earned his second consecutive midweek win and Winebarger collected his first career save. The two struck out nine batters combined and allowed just one hit after the third inning.

The bottom third of the Elon batting order stole the show in the 10-1 win. Charlie Granatell, Tank Yaghoubi and Jake Hajdu combined to go 7-for-11 on the night. Granatell brought in a season high three runs while Yaghoubi finished 3-for-3 with three singles and reached base five times.

How It Happened
  • For the second straight game, Elon jumped out in front in the first inning. After a leadoff Jackson Alford single and stolen base, Alex Duffey would hit an infield single to the second baseman who could not field the ball clean on a diving attempt. Alford would score from third on the play and Elon lead 1-0.
  • Radford answered with their only run of the game in the following half inning.
  • The two sides continued to pitch well with Straniero retiring seven of eight batters going into the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the fifth, Elon would get a run back following back-to-back errors by the Highlanders which put Jackson Alford on third base. A sacrifice fly from Ryan Sprock gave Elon a lead they would not give up going into the sixth inning.
  • Straniero continued to deal in the sixth and as he approached 100 pitches, he had his most effective inning. The right-hander went 1-2-3 in the inning and struck out a pair of batters.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the bottom of the order loaded the bases and with two outs Kenny Mallory Jr. drove in a pair of runs on a two-out RBI single to give the Phoenix a three-run advantage.
  • After a clean half inning from Owen Winebarger, Elon added two more runs on a Charlie Granatell double which opened the lead to five.
  • Elon broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff single from Sprock and a sacrifice bunt from Duffey, Will Vergantino slapped a single through the left side to bring home Sprock. Another RBI came from a single from Charlie Granatell to give the senior three on the day. Jake Hajdu notched an RBI single and with a Brent Smith RBI groundout, the freshman drove in his first collegiate run.
  • Winebarger would hold down the ninth with just nine pitches in the inning and cement Elon's 10-1 win over Radford.
