Elon, N.C.- A team effort on the plate and on the mound saw the Elon Phoenix (8-9) take down the Wofford Terriers (12-6) Friday night. The Phoenix put together a 15-hit night and allowed just four earned runs in the 12-5 win over Wofford Friday night.
Â
Six different Phoenix batters drove in a run on Friday with
Ryan Sprock and
Vince Fattore both collecting three RBIs.
Ryan Sprock had another three-hit afternoon and came a triple short of the cycle. Fattore's three-run double in the first inning put the Phoenix ahead early and provided a large cushion for starter
Justin Mitrovich.
Â
Mitrovich earned his second win of the season on Friday night after last weekend's no-decision. The right-hander put together a six-inning performance and allowed a season-high three earned runs in the outing.
Itai Spinoza tossed another clean frame for the Phoenix as Spinoza has now not allowed an earned run in all five of his appearances this season.
Â
How It Happened
- The Phoenix defense provided an early spark for Mitrovich as a single through the right side of the infield looked as if it would lead to runners on the corners with no outs. However, Vince Fattore was able to gun down the runner going for third for the first out of the ballgame.
- After the early defensive fireworks, the Phoenix offense provided some of its own. Two of the first three Phoenix batters, Jackson Alford and Sprock, reached on singles. Elon loaded the bases for Charlie Granatell, who, after a great at-bat, reached on a walk to give the Phoenix a 1-0.
- Vince Fattore cleared the bases with a double the following at-bat to give the Phoenix a four-run first inning. Tank Yaghoubi would answer the double with a single up the middle to score Fattore and give Elon five first frame runs.
- Wofford answered back in the second with a sacrifice fly to cut into the deficit.
- Ryan Sprock got the run back in the bottom of the second with the longest Phoenix home run of the season. A 413-foot blast to center got the Phoenix run back and saw the lead at 6-1.
- The Terriers added an unearned run in the top of the fourth on heads up base running to bring the Phoenix lead down to four again.
- Alex Duffey would add to his RBI total with an RBI single to left in the fourth and a Will Vergantino RBI triple would score Sprock and give the Phoenix a seven-run lead after four.
- After two Terrier runs in the fifth, Elon countered with two of their own. Elon continued to do damage with the bases loaded as Sprock delivered against, with a two-out, bases loaded double which brought home two runs.
- Elon scored their final run of the game on an RBI groundout from Tank Yaghoubi in the sixth inning to give the Phoenix 12 runs through six.
- Wofford hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh but that was all the offense that would find the plate as the Phoenix took game one over the Terriers, 12-5.
