Duffey Homers, Reaches Four Times In Sunday Loss To Charleston

Mt. Pleasant, S.C.- Alex Duffey did it all in the batter's box in Elon's (9-14, 1-2 CAA) Sunday loss to the College of Charleston Cougars (14-8, 2-1 CAA). Duffey finished with his second straight three-hit game against the Cougars, homered, drove in three runs and reached four times in the 11-6 loss.

How It Happened
  • Elon continued to make first inning runs a habit with four runs across in the first frame. After back-to-back singles from Jackson Alford and Charlie Granatell, Duffey took a hanging slider deep to right field to jump on the Cougars with three runs early.
  • The Phoenix added another in the first frame with an all-around effort from Will Vergantino. Vergantino doubled down the left field line, stole third and used his speed on a Kenny Mallory Jr. groundball to second base to score the fourth run of the inning.
  • Charleston would counter with eight consecutive runs over the next three innings to take a four-run advantage into the sixth inning.
  • After Elon bounced the Cougar starter, Tank Yaghoubi would reach base and be moved to second by a groundout. Granatell delivered another clutch base hit to center field which scored Yaghoubi from second to bring the deficit to three.
  • Following another Cougar run, Elon countered with another. Two singles from Duffey and Mallory, Vince Fattore battled with an eight pitch at-bat which resulted in a base hit to left field that scored Duffey.
  • Charleston added two more runs to their tally while Elon could not answer with any more and fell 11-6.
