ELON – The Elon University women's tennis team added 12 victories Saturday to close out a successful start to its fall season at the Jimmy Powell Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Juniors
Simone Bergeron and
Mariana Reding won the doubles competition with Bergeron also sharing the title for the singles competition. Bergeron and Reding won all three of their doubles matches over the weekend to finish with 12 points, the most of any pairing in the tournament. Bergeron also notched 12 points in singles to tie Richmond's Sofia Barbulescu and UNCG's Sophia Cedeno for the most.
Bergeron and Reding secured the doubles competition with a pair of wins Saturday. The duo opened the morning with a 6-2 victory against Cedeno and Lauren Thomson from UNCG before adding a 6-3 triumph later against Liberty's Maria Turchetto and Aranai Martinez.
In singles, Bergeron went 2-1 for the weekend in the No. 1 flight. She defeated Turchetto 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday to earn a share of the singles title.
Cornelia Kack,
Alexis Nyborg,
Lisa Kranec,
Madison Cordisco and
Helen Sarikulaya all finished the event with a 3-0 record in singles. Kack, Nyborg and Sarikulaya did not drop a singles set during the tournament while Kranec and Cordisco lost just one set each. Cordisco and Kack also went 3-0 together as a doubles pairing to finish the event with a 6-0 combined record.
The Phoenix finished the weekend with 31 total victories across doubles and singles, with 19 coming Friday and 12 on Saturday. Elon went 10-2 in doubles and 21-3 in singles over the weekend, losing just nine sets in those 24 singles outings.
All eight of Elon's players finished with a winning record for the weekend in both singles and doubles, with everyone winning at least two matches in both singles and doubles.
