ELON – The Elon women's basketball team staged a third-quarter rally, but Monmouth shot 55.6% in the second half to seal a 77-62 win on the opening night of CAA play at the Schar Center on Friday.
LaNae' Corbett and
Ashlee Shaw led the team with 15 points apiece, while Corbett paced the Phoenix with a season-high eight rebounds. Elon fell to 5-8 overall (0-1 CAA) while Monmouth moved to 8-4 (1-0).
THE RUNDOWN
- The Phoenix trailed 5-2 early before using a 10-2 run to take a 12-7 lead with 4:47 remaining in the opening quarter. The Hawks answered, trimming the margin to 15-14 by the end of the first.
- Monmouth struck first in the second quarter before Kamryn Doty knocked down a three to put Elon back in front, 18-17. The Hawks followed with a 13-8 run to build a 31-25 lead before the Phoenix cut it to 31-28, but a buzzer-beating three sent Monmouth into halftime ahead 34-28.
- Elon cut the deficit to two with 8:44 left in the third quarter, but three straight Monmouth baskets gave the Hawks their first double-digit lead at 44-34. The Phoenix responded with a 12-8 run to reach 48-46, but Monmouth closed the quarter on a 10-0 run, leading 58-46 entering the final period.
- The Phoenix worked to force turnovers early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 60-50, but Monmouth quickly responded, pushing the lead to 63-50. The teams traded baskets, but the Hawks' advantage was too much for Elon to overcome, falling 77-62
NOTES
- Shaw was 4-for-7 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line en route to her team-high 15 points scored.
- Corbett tallied a season-high eight rebounds and recorded a block for the second straight game to go along with her 15 points.
- Four Phoenix players led the team in assists with two each, while three players had a team-high two steals.
- Elon led the offensive glass for the 10th time this season, outrebounding the Hawks 11-9 offensively.
- The Phoenix returned the same starters: LaNae Corbett, Quinzia Fulmore, Maraja Pass, Ashlee Shaw, and Tyana Walker.
