ELON – The Elon women's basketball team earned its first CAA victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Hampton 84-75 behind a full-team effort.
LaNae' Corbett recorded her second 20-point game of the season with a career-high and team-leading 28 points. The sophomore shot 14-for-16 from the floor while adding two steals.
Kamryn Doty added a career-high 16 points, going 4-for-6 from deep.
THE RUNDOWN
- Elon got out to a 12-5 early lead with Corbett scoring eight points in that span. Hampton responded with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four, but an 11-5 run by Elon, sparked by three three-pointers from Doty, pushed the Phoenix ahead 25-10 to close the quarter.
- The Phoenix stayed hot to open the second quarter, using a 13-6 run to extend their advantage to 38-16 with 6:13 remaining in the half. Hampton answered with a 12-4 run to trim the deficit to 40-28. The teams then traded baskets and went into halftime with Elon leading 43-33.
- A 9-4 run gave Elon a 52-37 lead, but Hampton cut it to 56-52 with 4:42 left in the third. Another Doty three pushed the lead back to seven at 59-52, and back-to-back baskets from Ashanti Fox put the Phoenix up 63-55 heading into the fourth.
- Elon extended their lead to 69-57 with 7:05 remaining. After the teams traded baskets, an and-one from Ashanti Fox gave the Phoenix a 78-65 cushion with 2:09 left, setting up free throws that helped seal an 84-75 victory.
NOTES
- The last time the Phoenix scored more than 84 points in a CAA game was in their 85-61 win over William & Mary on March 3, 2022.
- The Phoenix shot 71% (10-for-14) in the first quarter, including 3-for-4 from the three-point line, all of which were scored by Doty.
- Elon converted 23 points off of Hampton's 14 turnovers in the first half, with Doty and Laila Anderson going 4-for-4 combined from beyond the arc.
- Corbett notched her fourth straight game in double-figures with a career-high 28 points.
- Kamryn Doty recorded her first game this season in double-figures, scoring a career-high 16 points.
- Ashlee Shaw led the Phoenix with a career-high 12 rebounds, followed by six from Tamia Watkins.
- Ashanti Fox reached double-figures for the fourth time this season with 11 points.
- Maraja Pass led the team with five assists, while Corbett and Quinzia Fulmore recorded a team-best two steals apiece.
- Elon won the battle on the offensive glass for the 11th time this season, outrebounding the Pirates 17-14 offensively.
- Tamia Watkins reentered the starting lineup alongside LaNae Corbett, Maraja Pass, Ashlee Shaw, and Tyana Walker.
