ELON – The Elon women's basketball team led wire-to-wire and earned a 67-60 win over North Carolina A&T on Friday night at Schar Center.
Ashanti Fox led the team in scoring for the second time this season with 16 points, going 6-for-12 from the field, while
Laila Anderson and
Ashlee Shaw added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Elon improved to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in CAA play with its second straight CAA home win, while North Carolina A&T fell to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
THE RUNDOWN
- The Aggies jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter before Elon compiled an 8-2 run to take a 12–11 advantage with 3:51 remaining. The teams traded baskets to close the quarter, with Elon leading 17-15.
- The teams went back and forth to start the second quarter, with the Phoenix holding a 22-21 edge. Elon then extended the gap to 30-27 before a 5-0 run from Ashanti Fox put the Phoenix ahead 35-27. North Carolina A&T answered with a basket before Samira Khalil drilled a half-court shot at the buzzer to send the Phoenix into halftime leading 40-30.
- North Carolina A&T opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to pull within three at 40-37 before Elon rookies Fox and Tamia Watkins combined for a 13-10 stretch to push the Phoenix ahead 53-47. LaNae' Corbett knocked down two free throws to close the third quarter, giving the Phoenix a 55-47 advantage.
- The Aggies closed the gap again, getting within four at 58-54, later getting within two at 60-58, before the Phoenix clinched a 67-60 game with free throws.
NOTES
- Fox reached double-figures for the seventh time this season to lead the team with 16 points.
- Anderson reached double-figures for the third consecutive game with 15 points.
- Tamia Watkins led the team with seven rebounds and added nine points.
- Maraja Pass and Tyana Walker led the team with three steals apiece, while Shaw added a team-high two assists.
- As a team, the Phoenix shot their highest free-throw percentage of the season, going 25-for-26 (96.2%) from the charity stripe.
- Laila Anderson and Ruby Willard returned to the Phoenix starting lineup alongside in LaNae Corbett, Maraja Pass, and Tyana Walker.
