ELON – The Elon women's basketball team mounted a spirited second-half comeback, but ultimately fell 77-69 to CAA frontrunner College of Charleston on Friday night at Schar Center.
Laila Anderson led the Phoenix with 19 points, marking her fifth straight game in double figures. She shot 6-for-14 from the field and was perfect from the free-throw line for the third consecutive game.
Tyana Walker led the team on the boards with nine rebounds and added three steals.
Elon fell to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in CAA play, while College of Charleston improved to 17-3 and remained undefeated in CAA play at 9-0.
THE RUNDOWN
- Elon came out to a 14-8 lead to start the first quarter, later extending it to 20-11 thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Tyana Walker and Ashanti Fox. Charleston cut the deficit to three at 20-17, but a Kamryn Doty layup ended the quarter with the Phoenix ahead, 22-17.
- The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 32-24 lead with 4:15 left in the frame. Charleston later extended its advantage to 38-26, and the teams traded baskets to close the half with Elon trailing 40-30.
- Elon came out of the break on a 7-4 run to get within seven at 44-37 with 6:00 remaining in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets before Elon closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to trail 57-50 heading into the final period.
- Fox opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to pull the Phoenix within one at 57-56. Charleston responded with a 9-0 spurt to extend its lead to 66-56, before Elon battled back to get within two at 68-66. Charleston was able to seal the 77-69 win at the charity stripe to close the game.
NOTES
- Laila Anderson led the team in scoring for the third time this season with 19 points and added three assists.
- Ashanti Fox reached double figures for the eighth time this season, finishing with 12 points, including two three-pointers.
- LaNae' Corbett added 11 points, marking her 13th double-figure performance of the season.
- Maraja Pass dished out a team-high four assists, while Tyana Walker led the Phoenix with nine rebounds and three steals.
- Elon won the rebounding battle, 45-38, and outscored the Cougars 32-16 in the paint.
- The Phoenix used the same starting lineup of Laila Anderson, LaNae' Corbett, Maraja Pass, Tyana Walker, and Tamia Watkins.
