COLUMBIA, S.C. – A trio of Phoenix doubles pairings advanced in the main draw Friday at ITA Carolina Regionals as the Elon women's tennis team completed day two of action at the Carolina Tennis Center.
Cornelia Kack and
Iga Piotrowska were the first Elon tandem to advance, winning 8-2 against Presbyterian's Roxy Valdés and Paulina Villega. The duo improved to 6-1 together this fall with the victory and will face Georgia Cranford and Amelie Smejkalova in the second round of doubles Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
The next winning Phoenix duo was
Simone Bergeron and
Mariana Reding as they dispatched
Nathalie Marinovitch and Thalia Smith from Western Carolina, 8-4. Bergeron and Reding have now won in the main draw at both ITA All-Americans and ITA Carolina Regionals this fall. The pairing will face Amalie Drukerova and Elizabeth Ivanov of Charlotte in Saturday's second round at approximately 10 a.m.
Rounding out Elon's doubles triumphs Friday was
Lisa Kranec and
Alexandria Warsing. The Phoenix tandem found themselves level at 6-6 against Furman's seeded duo of Bianca Ceroni and Sasha Dimitrov before a hold of serve put Elon up, 7-6. With the Paladins serving to force a tiebreak in the next game, Kranec and Warsing broke serve to secure an 8-6 victory. They will take on Charlotte's duo of Karina Mohamed and Amalia Widdowson at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the second round.
This is the second time in three years that three Elon doubles teams have advanced to the second round at ITA Carolina Regionals and the third straight year multiple Phoenix duos have advanced at the tournament.
Kack also became the first Phoenix to win a main draw singles match at ITA Carolina Regionals since Lizette Reding in 2023 with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph in the opening round against Charlotte's Ivanov. Kack will face Wake Forest's Claire Hill, the draw's No. 9 seed, in Saturday's second round at approximately 1 p.m.
Bergeron took the opening set against NC State's Cranford in her main singles draw match, winning the final two games to secure a 6-4 lead. However, Cranford rallied to take the next two sets and complete a comeback victory. Bergeron will continue in the consolation draw Saturday with a match against Floortje Chrisstoffels from Coastal Carolina at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Saturday will feature the next two rounds of doubles in the morning and an afternoon round of singles.
