Elon Drops Road Contest At Drexel

Phoenix's Late Surge Not Enough In 68-59 Setback

PHILADELPHIA – The Elon women's basketball team put together a late fourth-quarter surge but ultimately fell 68-59 at Drexel on Friday night.  

Tamia Watkins led Elon (11-13, 6-6 CAA) with 16 points, going 7-for-11 from the field and marking her third straight game in double figures.

Drexel improved to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in conference action.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Drexel got out to an 8-2 lead before Elon cut the deficit to three at 9-6 with 5:15 left in the opening quarter. The Dragons closed the period on a 6-2 run to lead 15-8 after one.
  • The Phoenix used a 7-4 run to get within four, but Drexel responded with back-to-back scores to go ahead 23-15. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, with Elon trailing 31-22 at the break.
  • The teams continued to trade baskets before Drexel used a 6-0 run to take its first double-digit lead, 41-28, with 6:32 left in the third. A Tyana Walker three cut it to 10, but the Dragons closed the quarter on a 12-5 run to lead 53-36.
  • Elon opened the final frame on a 10-0 run to cut the Drexel lead to seven at 53-46 and later got within six at 56-50. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with the Dragons sealing a 68-59 win at the free-throw line.
NOTES
  • Tamia Watkins reached double figures for the third straight game, leading the team with 16 points and sharing the team lead with four rebounds.
  • Tyana Walker went 3-for-5 from three-point range, added four rebounds, and led the team with three steals.
  • Maraja Pass and Watkins each led the team with four assists apiece, while Kamryn Doty and Watkins each recorded a block.
  • The Phoenix led the offensive glass for the 16th time this season, outrebounding Drexel 9-8 offensively.
  • Elon used the same starting lineup of Laila Anderson, LaNae' Corbett, Maraja Pass, Tyana Walker, and Tamia Watkins.
UP NEXT
The Phoenix return home to host Campbell at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 20, before welcoming Northeastern two days later on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Schar Center.
