HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Elon women's basketball team held off a late Hofstra rally to secure a 58-56 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Ashanti Fox led the Phoenix with 15 points, going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, while
Kamryn Doty reached double figures for the second straight game with 13 points, shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Elon improved to 14–13 overall and 9–6 in CAA play, while Hofstra dropped to 6–20 overall and 4-11 in conference action.
THE RUNDOWN
- Hofstra got out to an 8-2 lead and later led 12-4 with 3:41 left in the opening quarter. Elon closed the frame on an 8-0 run to knot the score at 12-12 after one.
- The Phoenix continued their momentum into the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead, forcing a Hofstra timeout. The Pride responded with an 8-2 run of their own to trail the Phoenix 21-20. The teams then traded baskets, with Elon holding a 25-23 advantage heading into halftime.
- The Pride evened the score at 25-25 before Elon answered with a 10-2 run to build a 35-27 advantage with 4:40 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with the Phoenix taking a 43-35 lead into the final frame.
- Elon stretched its lead to 57-46 midway through the quarter, but the Pride used a late run to trim the deficit to one at 57-56. The Phoenix responded with two crucial defensive stops in the final seconds and secured the 58-56 victory at the line.
NOTES
- Ashanti Fox led the team with 15 points, marking her third straight game in double figures.
- Kamryn Doty also reached double figures, scoring 13 points while shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
- Maraja Pass led the team for the 16th time this season with four assists.
- LaNae' Corbett and Ashlee Shaw paced the Phoenix on the glass, grabbing six rebounds apiece.
- Rookies Fox and Tamia Watkins recorded two steals each to lead the team.
- The Phoenix outpaced the Pride in bench points (37-6), rebounds (40-37), steals (10-4), and blocks (6-4).
- Elon used the same starting lineup of Laila Anderson, LaNae' Corbett, Maraja Pass, Tyana Walker, and Tamia Watkins.
