Elon Knocked Off At Monmouth

Phoenix Dealt 73-57 Loss In Road Finale

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Jason Rivera-Torres scored 17 points and Kavion McClain added 16 as Monmouth pulled away in the second half for a 73-57 victory over Elon on Saturday afternoon at OceanFirst Bank Center.

The loss dropped the Phoenix to 14-16 overall and 6-11 in Coastal Athletic Association play, while the Hawks improved to 16-14 and 10-7 in league action.

Chandler Cuthrell led Elon with 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting and a perfect 11-of-11 effort at the free-throw line. He also added four rebounds and five assists. Isaac Harrell contributed 11 points, and Bryson Cokley finished with eight.

Elon shot 40.8% from the field (20 of 49) and just 22.2% from 3-point range (4 of 18), while Monmouth connected at a 44.6% clip (25 of 56) and knocked down nine 3-pointers.

Monmouth led 34-28 at halftime after limiting Elon to 38.5% shooting in the first half and forced eight turnovers.

The Phoenix trimmed the deficit to four early in the second half on a Cokley dunk and a pair of Cuthrell free throws, but Monmouth answered with a decisive surge. McClain and Rivera-Torres combined for 20 second-half points as the Hawks shot 53.6% after the break to build their lead to as many as 21 points.

Monmouth also controlled the glass, outrebounding Elon 36-26 and holding a 13-3 advantage in second-chance points.

Elon never led in the second half and trailed for more than 35 minutes overall.

NOTES
  • Cuthrell's 23-point effort was the 17th time he's scored 20-plus points this season.

  • Harrell turned in his 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season.
  • Elon finished the regular season with a 6-9 record on the road.
