HAMPTON, Va. – The Elon men's basketball team battled through 50 minutes Thursday night but came up short in a double-overtime road loss, falling 87-79 to Hampton in Coastal Athletic Association play at the Convocation Center.
The Phoenix and Pirates were even through regulation and the first extra period before Hampton pulled away in the second overtime, outscoring Elon 14-6 over the final five minutes.
Chandler Cuthrell turned in a standout performance for Elon, finishing with a career-high 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting with 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Ned Hull added 15 points off the bench with four 3-pointers, while
Ja'Juan Carr scored 13.
Isaac Harrell had seven points and tied a career high with 10 rebounds as Elon held a 42-30 edge in paint points.
The game was tight throughout, with Elon and Hampton tied 33-33 at halftime and again at 64-64 at the end of regulation after a back-and-forth second half featuring five lead changes. The Phoenix built a five-point second-half lead midway through the period but did not score over the final 3:57 of regulation, including misses on the front end of two 1-and-1 opportunities in the final minute. Hampton tied the game on a step-back 3-pointer by Daniel Johnson with 24 seconds left.
Hampton controlled the offensive glass, turning 17 offensive rebounds into 25 second-chance points. Elon went 18-of-30 at the free throw line, while the Pirates were 26-of-37.
In the first overtime, Cuthrell scored inside to give Elon a 66-64 lead, and Hull later hit a three to tie the game at 73-73 with under a minute remaining. Neither team scored again, sending the contest to a second overtime.
Hampton took command in the second extra period, opening on a decisive run and pushing its lead to as many as 10 in the final minute. Elon was limited to two field goals in the period.
Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt led Hampton with 23 points, going 12-of-18 at the foul line. Etienne Strothers and Daniel Johnson each added 18 points, and Josh Ogundele had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Elon shot 42.9% from the floor and 30.4% from three-point range, while Hampton shot 37.7% overall and made nine 3-pointers.
NOTES
- The defeat was Elon's first double-overtime game since Dec. 2, 2017, when the Phoenix beat Saint Peter's 71-65.
- Elon fell to 1-2 in overtime games this season.
- Cuthrell's 32 points marked his first career 30-point game. It was the 16th time he's surpassed 20 points this season.
- Hull was 4-of-6 shooting from deep. He's knocked down 11 of his last 17 shots from beyond the arc over the past four games.
