Late Elon Comeback Falls Short At ECU

Three Batters Record Multi-HIt Nights

GREENVILLE – Despite a three-run eighth inning rally, Elon baseball (9-11) fell to East Carolina (13-8-1), 4-3, on Tuesday night.

Three Elon hitters recorded multi-hit games, led by Jackson Alford, who continued his strong early-season form. Alford finished 2-for-4 with a triple, while Lawson Wheeler and Gavin Bogdanchik each added two hits and an RBI.

All three pitchers named Cole saw action on Tuesday, combining to cover half of the game on the mound. Cole Miller made his second midweek start, Cole Hansen struck out four batters over two innings, and Cole Taylor made his first collegiate appearance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • East Carolina struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Pirates added single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to build a 4-0 lead.
  • Elon broke through in the eighth inning, snapping a lengthy scoring drought. After Alford's triple, Wheeler singled to right field to bring home the Phoenix's first run. Brian DuRoff was then hit by a pitch, and Bogdanchik followed with an RBI single through the right side. With the bases loaded and one out, Connor Roche beat out a fielder's choice to score Elon's third run of the inning.
  • Following an efficient eighth inning from RJ Latkowski, Elon entered the ninth needing one run to tie. Wheeler singled to keep the rally alive, but DuRoff narrowly missed a game-tying home run to center field, flying out to end the game.

QUICK HITS
  • Cole Miller delivered a clean first inning in his second midweek start.
  • Cole Hansen struck out four batters over a team-high two innings.
  • Cole Taylor made his collegiate debut, tossing a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning.

  • Lawson Wheeler notched his second multi-hit game of the season, driving in and scoring a run.
  • Gavin Bogdanchik added a multi-hit performance and an RBI in the eighth inning.
  • Kevin Denty and Jake Hajdu each recorded a hit in the loss.
