Elon Drops Northeastern Opener

Phoenix Cannot Overcome Defensive Woes

Brookline, Mass. – Five defensive errors proved costly Friday as Elon (9-12, 2-5 CAA) fell to Northeastern (11-8, 6-1 CAA), 17-5, in seven innings.

Five different Phoenix players recorded hits, led by Gar Hindle, who notched the first multi-hit game of his collegiate career. Jackson Alford contributed a hit, scored a run, and added a stolen base, while Brian DuRoff drove in two runs to extend his team-leading total to 17 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elon struck first for the first time in five games, plating two runs in the opening inning. DuRoff delivered an RBI single, and Jared Hall followed with an RBI groundout to give the Phoenix an early advantage.
  • The lead was short-lived, however, as Northeastern responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning—all unearned following defensive miscues.
  • In the fourth inning, heads-up baserunning by Hall allowed him to score from second on an RBI infield single by Hindle, trimming the deficit.
  • After the rocky first inning, starter Brian Strange settled in, retiring nine consecutive batters before the Huskies added two more runs in the fourth.
  • Northeastern continued to pull away, scoring four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
  • Elon added two runs in the seventh on RBIs from Kevin Denty and DuRoff, but the Huskies secured the run-rule victory in game one of the series.

QUICK HITS
  • Brian Strange made his sixth Friday start, allowing four earned runs over 4.1 innings while striking out at least five batters for the sixth consecutive outing.
  • Gar Hindle recorded his first career multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Brian DuRoff posted his fifth multi-RBI game of the season and extended his reached-base streak to nine games.
  • Jackson Alford stole his 19th base of the season and scored his team-leading 20th run.
  • Jared Hall's fourth-inning double was his fifth of the season, moving him into the team lead.
  • Kevin Denty reached base three times despite not recording a hit.
