Winebarger Lifts Phoenix Over Northeastern

Elon Snaps Five Game Skid

Brookline, Mass. – Behind a dominant eight-inning outing from Owen Winebarger, Elon (10-12, 3-5 CAA) defeated Northeastern (11-9, 6-2 CAA), 3-2, on Saturday.

Winebarger delivered a career-high 99 pitches across eight innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five. RJ Latkowski closed the door in the ninth, earning his sixth save of the season.

Elon's offense managed three hits on the day, with two coming from Jake Hajdu. Hajdu went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Connor Roche recorded the other hit, a game-tying RBI single in the fourth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northeastern struck first in the opening inning, using a squeeze play to bring home the game's first run.
  • The Huskies added to their lead in the third inning with an RBI single, making it 2-0.
  • Elon responded in the top of the fourth. Hajdu's RBI single put the Phoenix on the board, and Roche followed with an RBI base hit to tie the game.
  • After the third inning, Winebarger settled in and cruised through the next four frames, needing just 29 pitches during that stretch.
  • The Phoenix manufactured the go-ahead run in the seventh. Hajdu led off with a single and advanced to second on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Roche. Nate Sterling moved him to third with a groundout, and with two outs, Jackson Alford reached on an error when his speed forced an errant throw, allowing Hajdu to score.
  • Latkowski entered in the ninth and retired the Huskies in order to secure the win.

QUICK HITS
  • The victory marks Elon's first win in Boston since 2022.
  • Winebarger set career highs with eight innings pitched and 99 pitches thrown, while striking out five. Opponents are hitting just .209 against him this season.
  • Latkowski's six saves lead the CAA; no other reliever in the conference has more than three.
  • Hajdu recorded his third multi-hit game of the season.
  • Roche extended his on-base streak to seven games, the longest on the team.
