ELON – Elon baseball (10-15, 3-7 CAA) faltered Friday night for the fourth time in CAA play. The Phoenix fell to Monmouth (12-10, 8-2 CAA) 6-3 Friday night despite outhitting the Hawks.
Elon finished with 11 hits with four multi-hit games in the batting lineup.
Brian DuRoff returned to his early season form with a 2-for-4 day with two doubles and two runs scored.
Kevin Denty and
Jose Mariano drove in all three runs with Denty driving in a pair.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first three innings showed nothing but zeros on the scoreboard as Ryan Mealy and Brian Strange settled in on the mound.
- The Hawks manufactured two runs in the fourth to pull ahead 2-0.
- Elon responded in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to tie the score. The Phoenix put two runners in scoring position before Denty drove in one on a sacrifice fly before Mariano singled home the tying run.
- Monmouth answered with a run in the top of the sixth to take back the lead.
- Denty tied the score at three in the seventh inning with an RBI single.
- Monmouth put up three straight runs with one in the eighth and two in the ninth to seal the Friday afternoon win.
QUICK HITS
- Jackson Alford stole his 20th base of the season Friday. Alford becomes the first Phoenix since Tyler Stanley in 2019 to steal 20 or more bases in a season. He also registered his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
- Brian DuRoff laced two doubles into left field Friday afternoon. DuRoff scored two of Elon's three runs.
- Kevin Denty continues to find hits and drive in runs. Denty drove in two of the three Elon runs and finished 1-for-4.
- Jose Mariano finished with a two-hit game on Friday. Mariano drove in the game-tying hit in the fifth inning.
- Jake Hajdu secured his fourth multi-hit game of the season on Friday.
- Brian Strange tossed his third quality start of the season. Strange finished with six innings on the mound and allowed three runs. He struck out five batters for the fourth game in a row.
