Williamsburg, Va. – The Elon baseball team (17-27, 8-17 CAA) was upended in extra innings by William & Mary (20-23, 11-11 CAA), Friday night. The Tribe took game one in 12 innings, 5-4.
The Phoenix used only two pitchers on Friday night and both worked effectively.
Brian Strange went six innings and struck out seven hitters.
Sam Nomura went a career high five innings in relief.
Brian DuRoff homered in the first inning to continue his hot streak.
Vince Fattore homered for the third time in the last two Friday nights in the loss.
Nate Sterling had one of his best evenings with a three-hit night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brian DuRoff got the Phoenix on the board first with a solo home run in the opening frame.
- William & Mary evened the score with an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the first.
- Elon responded in the top of the third with a two-out, RBI single from Jared Hall.
- The Phoenix added to their lead in the fourth with a solo home run from Vince Fattore.
- A William & Mary sacrifice fly cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fourth.
- Jackson Alford hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to increase the lead back to two.
- The Tribe countered with a run in the fifth and sixth to tie the score at four.
- Both teams' relief pitching dominated until the 12th inning when the Tribe sealed the win with a walk-off home run.
QUICK HITS
- Brian Strange struck out seven hitters on Friday night. The seven strikeouts are the most in a game since he struck out 11 against Fairfield.
- Sam Nomura tossed a career-high five innings in relief. Nomura got through five innings in only 45 pitches.
- Brian DuRoff started his month of May where he ended his April. DuRoff hit a solo home run in the first to increase his extra-base hit tally to 23.
- Vince Fattore added to his Friday night home run tally against the Tribe. Fattore followed up his two-homer game against UNCW with a solo home run against William & Mary.
- Nate Sterling registered his second three-hit game with the Phoenix. Both of his three-hit games this season have come against the Tribe.
- Jackson Alford stole his 29th base of the season on Friday. Alford becomes the first Phoenix since 2008 with 29 or more stolen bases in a season.
- In three of the last five losses at Plumeri Park, the Phoenix has fallen on a walk-off hit.
