WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Elon baseball team (19-27, 10-17 CAA) capped its CAA road slate with a 7-5 win over William & Mary (20-25, 11-13 CAA) on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Elon clinched series wins in each of its final three conference road series.
At the plate,
Jared Hall led the way, finishing a double shy of the cycle. Hall blasted his fifth home run of the season and added a two-run triple that gave Elon a lead it would not relinquish.
Gar Hindle,
Brian DuRoff, and
Vince Fattore each added multi-hit performances.
The trio of
Owen Winebarger,
Cole Hansen, and
Mike Staiano combined to hold the Tribe offense in check. Hansen earned his third win of the season, while Staiano recorded his sixth save, tying teammate
RJ Latkowski for the CAA lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second straight game, William & Mary struck first, plating two runs in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
- Elon broke through in the fifth inning after being held scoreless through the first four frames. Brian DuRoff delivered an RBI single to score Jackson Alford and cut the deficit to one. Jared Hall followed with a two-run home run to give the Phoenix a 3-2 advantage.
- The Tribe responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to reclaim a 4-3 lead heading into the final three innings.
- Elon answered in the seventh with a decisive four-run frame. Hall continued his big day with a two-run triple to put Elon back in front. Vince Fattore added an RBI double, and Gavin Bogdanchik capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-4.
- William & Mary added a run in the bottom half of the seventh, but Staiano shut the door with scoreless eighth and ninth innings to secure the win.
