ELON – The Elon baseball team (19-29, 10-18 CAA) fell in their opening game of a weekend series against the College of Charleston (23-25, 13-12 CAA). Elon clawed its way back into the game after trailing by as many as three but fell short with a 6-5 loss.
Brian DuRoff recorded his 19
th multi-hit game of the season Friday.
Vince Fattore continued his trend of homering on Friday nights. With a solo shot, Fattore has homered on three straight Friday nights.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Charleston struck first with an RBI triple in the second inning.
- Elon countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. A Nate Sterling sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Jake Hajdu gave the Phoenix the lead.
- The Cougars took the lead back with a two-run inning of their own. Charleston expanded their lead with another two-run inning in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
- Vince Fattore gave the Phoenix life with a solo home run to get a run back.
- A Kevin Denty RBI double in the sixth inning got the Phoenix back within a run before Elon tied it in the seventh on a DuRoff RBI single.
- Charleston took the lead back for good in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to right.
QUICK HITS
- Vince Fattore hit his fourth home run on the last three Fridays in game one. Fattore is tied for the team lead in home runs with six. Fattore scored three runs Friday, his most in a game this season.
- Brian DuRoff put together another multi-hit performance with a pair of singles.
- In his return to the lineup, Kevin Denty put together a 2-for-3 performance, including an RBI double.
- Jackson Alford put together the 39th multi-hit game of his Elon career on Friday. Alford stole his 31st base of the season, which is tied for the 8th most in Elon history for a single season.
- Cole Hansen weathered an early Charleston storm with 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Hansen allowed just one run on two hits and struck out four.
- Sam Nomura put together another scoreless outing with 1.2 innings of relief.
