CARY, N.C. – Elon women's tennis seniors Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding pushed another seeded duo Monday at the ITA All-American Championships but came up just short in a match tiebreak at the Cary Tennis Park.

Bergeron and Reding won the second set against Shannon Lam and Eugenia Zozaya Menendez, the No. 52 ITA ranked doubles duo, in their first-round qualifying draw match to take the contest to a deciding tiebreak. However, the Virginia duo held off the Phoenix for a 6-2, 6-3, 10-4 victory.

The Cavaliers broke in Elon's opening service game of the match as the first three games of the match all went to deuce. Virginia broke again later in the frame on the way to a 6-2 set win.

Elon battled back in the second set, breaking serve in the fourth game on a deuce point to take a 3-1 lead. Bergeron and Reding then held to consolidate the break and later served for the set at 5-3. The Elon duo went ahead 40-0 in their service game, but Virginia won the next three points to force a deciding deuce point. The Phoenix won the deuce point to take the set and force a match tiebreak.

Bergeron and Reding took the first point after a Virginia double fault, but the Cavaliers went ahead 4-2 at the first change of ends and 8-4 at the second changeover. Virginia then won the next two points to secure the match victory.

This was the third seeded opponent for Bergeron and Reding in the tournament after beating a pair of seeds in the prequalifying draw to advance to the qualifying draw. All three of Bergeron and Reding's opponents this week have been from Power Four schools.

Bergeron and Reding will close out their stay at the ITA All-American Championships tomorrow at 4:30 against Ranah Akua Stoiber and Anastasiia Gureva from Georgia in the consolation draw.
