RICHMOND, Va. – Elon defender
Joe Taylor was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as the conference unveiled its weekly men's soccer awards.
Taylor scored the game-winning goal Friday night for the Phoenix at Duke, converting a free kick from nearly 30 yards out in the third minute for the only score of the contest. The senior then logged the full 90 minutes for the first time this season to help Elon shut out the Blue Devils, 1-0.
The victory was Elon's third ever against Duke and the first to come in Durham. It was Elon's first road win over an ACC opponent since 2015.
The weekly honor is the first of Taylor's career. An Elon defender has now taken home CAA Defensive Player of the Week in four of the last six seasons.
Elon returns home to Rudd Field on Tuesday night for a match against USC Upstate. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
