ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Chris Carmichael went 3-for-4, including his fourth home run of the season, to lead the Howard University baseball team to a 5-3 victory over host Elon College, Tuesday afternoon at Newsome Field.
Carmichael wasted no time as he sent Elon starter Brian Laniak's (1-2) second pitch of the game over the right field wall to score the first of two runs in the opening frame.
Bison pitcher Richard Spencer held the Fightin' Christians (6-19-1) hitless through the first five innings of action. But Elon responded in the sixth when Jason Tuttle broke up Spencer's no-hit bid with a sharp single and would later score on Garth Lanning's RBI single. Following back-to-back walks to Whit Bryant and Shaun Kopczynski to load the bases, Lanning scored on a wild pitch by Spencer to tie the game at 2-2. After a Jim Swenson walk and a Howard pitching change, Brian Kane drove in Bryant from third with a sacrifice fly to give Elon the lead, 3-2.
The Bison (7-16) responded quickly as they plated three runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to a Carmichael RBI single scoring DeShawn Gill and Byron Ewing's two-out, two-run single to vault Howard University into the lead for good, 5-3.
Eric Causey (1-0) picked up the win in relief, going four scoreless innings, allowing no hits, walked two and struck out a pair in his first decision of 1999.
Elon's Jason Tuttle recorded his 13th stolen base of the season, to keep alive a streak of four consecutive games with a theft on the base-path.
The Fightin' Christians return to action, Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. encounter at UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks handed Elon a 12-6 loss at Newsome Field on March 10.
