ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Senior Kelly Lloyd went 4-for-4, including her third home run of the season in the opening game of a doubleheader sweep over North Carolina A&T Sunday afternoon at East Field. The Fightin' Christians won both games by scores of 17-0 in five innings and 5-2 in the night-cap, in their season finale. Elon ends their campaign at 16-30, while the Aggies fall to 11-27.
In the first game, the Fightin' Christians recorded season highs with 17 runs and 13 hits while taking advantage of nine A&T errors to record their biggest margin of victory since a 17-0 win at Milligan two seasons ago (3/21/97). Elon scored in every inning including a 7-run fourth frame. Lloyd also added a double and a stolen base to go along with her solo round-tripper in the third inning off of Aggie starter Jennifer Hambright. Senior 2B Evie Benson went 3-for-4, including her fourth double of the season and three RBI, while senior teammate Holly Briel posted a pair of stolen bases and scored three runs in the win.
Freshman southpaw Shawn Browne recorded her first career shutout while throwing a two-hitter and retired 12 batters during one stretch in improving her record to 4-5.
In the second game, it looked to be a pitcher's duel as both starters faced the minimum after three innings. The Aggies drew first blood in the fourth inning when Demetrish Howard led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch by Jessica Vanderploeg. Janelle Cauthen hit an infield single and moved to second on Benson's throwing error which allowed Howard to score from third. Cauthen moved to third on a Jennifer Jones' bunt single and scored on wild pitch to lead 2-0.
Elon responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning when Emily Hall and Jen Warren reached on back-to-back Aggie errors. After Aggie hurler Jennifer Jones got Lloyd to pop up to 2B for the first out of the inning, Hall and Warren pulled a double-steal successfully. Hall scored on Kristen Kendrick's fielder's choice, while Warren crossed the plate with the equalizer when Briel and Kendrick where both on second base simultaneously and were doubled-up by shortstop Tiffany Fuller to end the Elon threat.
In the Elon sixth, Warren led off with a walk and moved to third on Lloyd's double off the the leftfield fence. Warren scored the go-ahead run on Fuller's second error of the game on a deep grounder by Kendrick. Lloyd came home on Pam Brock's RBI single to rightfield, while moving Kendrick to third. Kendrick would later score on Gina Krueger's RBI fielder's choice to vault to a 5-2 advantage.
Krueger, who relieved Vanderploeg in the fifth inning, struck out the side in the top of the seventh to seal the Fightin' Christian victory. Krueger (7-11) gets the win, while walking one and fanning four in three innings of work.
Kelly Lloyd established yet another pair of school records as she wraps up what has been a spectacular carrer. The Smyrna, DE native recorded her 320th assist in the first game, which breaks the previous mark held by former teammate Jill Bodino (1995-98). Lloyd posted eight assists on the day for 325 total at Elon. Her four hits in game also ties a game record, which has been accomplished on 12 other occasions, including Kristen Kendrick, who achieved the feat at Winthrop last season (2/21/98). Lloyd finishes her Elon career holding or sharing 18 school-bests. Briel also leaves her mark in the Fightin' Christian record book as she will graduate with the best career fielding percentage by an Elon player (.988).
Sunday's games marked the final collegiate outings for Kelly Lloyd, Evie Benson, Holly Briel, Jen Warren and Colleen Lally.
