ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Andrew Toole scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as Elon gained revenge on UNC Asheville, 73-63 at the Koury Center Saturday night, for an earlier season loss. The sophomore guard sank seven of eight free throw attempts as the Fightin' Christians tallied 11 of the game's final 17 points.
UNC Asheville overcame an early 20-11 deficit via a 21-10 run for a 32-30 advantage with 1:21 remaining in the first half. Brendon Rowell hit a jumper with 57 seconds left in the stanza to tie the score and David Hall sank back-to-back three-point field goals, including one at the halftime buzzer, as Elon completed an 8-0 run and took a 38-32 lead into the break. The Fightin' Christians never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 13 points at 54-41 with 11:11 remaining.
Rowell (12), Hall (10) and Clint Walker (10) all scored in double digits for Elon (11-12, 5-4 Big South Conference) as the Fightin' Christians improved to 9-1 at home for the season. Walker also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Andre Smith led UNC Asheville (6-17, 4-6) with 20 points. The Bulldogs had beaten Elon 88-76 in Asheville on Jan. 26.
The Fightin' Christians will host Winthrop at 7 p.m. Monday in the Koury Center. With five games remaining on the schedule, including three at home, Elon is a mere three victories away from clinching a .500 season.
