Brown Tops Elon With Strong Seventh

ELON COLLEGE, NC -- The Bears erupted for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to post a 9-6 victory over Elon Sunday afternoon at Newsome Field. The Fightin' Christians scored twice in the eighth and the ninth, but Brown survived the rally to take two out of three from Elon this weekend.

A pitcher's duel into the seventh witnessed the Fightin' Christians junior pitcher Nathan Holcomb (Brison City, NC) throwing 7.1 innings, including 6.1 of no-hit baseball, allowing three hits, five runs and striking out three. The Bears' John Cappello pitched five strong innings giving up two runs on two hits and striking out three, but was relived by Jonathan Stern who grabbed the victory for Brown. Junior Tim Schilling (High Point, NC) suffered the loss (2-1) for Elon.

In a wild eighth inning the Bears scored seven runs on three hits. The Fightin' Christians produced one hit-batter, one wild pitch, one error, two passed balls and three walks as they saw their deficit jump to seven (9-2).

Sophomore John Gann (Greensboro, NC) belted a 2-0 pitch for his first homerun of the season and sophomore Wes Smith (Pinehurst, NC) doubled in freshman Robbie Smith (Mebane, NC) to cut the Bears lead to 9-4 heading into the final inning.

Sophomore Jim Swenson (Richmond, VA) led off the ninth inning clubbing his fourth homer of the season over the centerfield wall. Freshman Wes Miller (Pfafftown, NC) scored on sophomore Whit Bryant's (Greenville, NC) sacrifice fly, but Brown was able to pop up Robbie Smith to end the ball game and garner the 9-6 victory.

Wes Smith and Swenson each tallied two hits while junior Shaun Kopczynski (Christmas, FL), senior Brian Kane (Gaithersburg, MD) freshman Brian Ingram (Winston-Salem, NC), Bryant, Gann and Robbie Smith collected one hit apiece for Elon.

The Fightin' Christians drop to 16-6 on the season while the Bears improve to 2-1. Elon will host the Fighting Camels of Campbell University Wednesday, March 16. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
