CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Big South Conference announced Monday that it is honoring Elon junior guard Brendon Rowell (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day School) as its Wingate Inn/Days Inn Player of the Week.
It is the first such honor this season, and second overall, for the Phoenix men's basketball program. Rowell also earned league PoW accolades once last season during Elon's first official Big South campaign.
Currently the league's leading scorer for the season at 19.5 points per game, Rowell posted team highs in both scoring and assists in both of Elon's conference contests last week. For the week, he averaged 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and only 3.0 turnovers while firing 61.5 percent (16-for-26) from the field, including 75 percent (3-for-4) from behind the arc.
Rowell poured in 28 points while tallying five rebounds and five assists in the Phoenix's 88-82 home victory over Liberty Wednesday. The three-year starter then recorded 18 points, five boards, five assists and three steals in Elon's 64-60 setback to Big South favorite Winthrop at Alumni Gym Saturday.
Rowell and the rest of the young Phoenix (6-11, 1-1 Big South) play host to UNC Asheville (8-7, 2-0) in a conference confrontation at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Elon is 22-5 (.815) in its past 27 contests in front of the rowdy crowds of Alumni Gym, including 5-2 -- five points shy of 7-0 -- this season.
