Phoenix Suffers First Big South Loss

LYNCHBURG, VA -- The Phoenix suffered their first Big South loss of the year on Saturday, falling 3-0 to defending tournament champion Liberty. The loss drops Elon to 5-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Liberty advances to 7-5-1, 3-1.

The two teams were scoreless through most of the first half, with the Flames breaking the scoreless tie when Katie Woodrow scored her fourth marker of the season off an assist from Rachel Lyndon at the 40:43 mark.

The score would remain 1-0 until midway through the second half when Lauren Zealand scored her first goal of the year off a Woodrow assist to up the lead to 2-0. Liz Rudolph would add the final score of the day, an unassisted goal at the 76:54 mark.

The three goals allowed by keeper Kara Zagol were the most given up by the Phoenix in Big South play this year. Zagol made one save on the day. Liberty netminder Natalie Mayer recorded two saves.

The Flames outshot Elon 10-5, including 4-2 on goal. Elon's two shots on goal came from Natalie Sampson and Mackenzie Sisson.

Elon will return to action on Monday afternoon when they host Birmingham Southern at 3:00 pm.
