Elon Heads To Long Island For CAA Opening Weekend

ELON – The unbeaten Elon University women's soccer team (6-0-2) opens CAA play with a pair of road games this week, as the Phoenix will face Hofstra (3-1-4) on Thursday and defending conference champion Stony Brook (5-2-1) on Sunday.

The Hofstra Series 
  • Elon is 3-8 all-time against the Pride but has won three of the last four meetings between the squads.
  • The Phoenix defeated the Hofstra last season at Rudd Field, 2-1. Ashlee Brehio scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute via an assist from Jess Beck.  
  • Elon is 0-5 in games played at Hofstra. The Pride defeated the Phoenix, 2-0, the last time the teams met in Hempstead in 2023.  
  • The Phoenix has been outscored 15-2 in its five trips to Hofstra.  
 
The Stony Brook Series 
  • Sunday will be the fourth all-time meeting between Elon and Stony Brook, with the Seawolves holding a 2-1 edge in the series.
  • The teams met in the CAA semifinals last season, with Stony Brook winning 2-1 at home. The Seawolves scored a pair of first half goals and an 88th minute tally from Lauren McCauley was not enough to spark an Elon comeback. 
  • Elon defeated Stony Brook in the 2024 regular season, winning 2-0 at Rudd. Seniors Lydia Totten and Kennedy Jones scored for the Phoenix with Katie Bisgrove recording a shutout in goal.  
  • The Phoenix is 0-2 in games played against the Seawolves at LaVelle Stadium.  
 
Last Time Out 
  • Elon delivered its 14th straight win or tie against a noncoference opponent on Sept. 10, defeating South Carolina State, 6-0, at Rudd Field.
  • Gabby Hoschek scored a pair to lead five different Elon goal scorers. Beck, Isa Murdock and Grace Gelhaus also scored a goal for the Phoenix. 
  • Hoschek's brace was her first since her Elon debut against Howard on Aug. 17, 2023. She is the second Phoenix player to score two goals in a game this season, joining Gelhaus, who scored a pair against VMI on Aug. 17.
  • Jordan Green led the Phoenix with two assists, her first two points of the season. 
  • Twins Jenna and Maya Abousaab started in the same game for the first time in their Elon careers. Maya recorded three shot attempts and delivered her first career assist on Hoschek's first-half goal. 
  • The Phoenix outshot the Bulldogs on the night, 31-2. It was Elon's first game with 30-plus shot attempts since taking 32 against Hampton last season. 
  • Anna Hamner played the first half in goal with Naomi Person taking over in the second half. It was the first game action of Person's career. They split the shutout for the Phoenix. Five Elon players made their first career starts – Brinker, Miranda Dumornay, Emma Geha, Charlise Grimes and Maya Abousaab. Brinker played the full 90 minutes on Elon's backline. 
  • In its last 14 games against non-conference opponents, Elon is 11-0-3. The Phoenix outscored its non-conference opponents 18-1 in eight games this season. 
 
Historic Shutout Streak 
  • With the shutout against South Carolina State last week, Elon set a new program record with its seventh consecutive clean sheet, surpassing the previous record of six that was set in 1986, Elon's inaugural season.
  • Elon has not conceded a goal in the last 643:28 of game time, a stretch that began in the second half at VCU on Aug. 14. It has been nearly 11 hours of game action since the Phoenix surrendered its only goal of the campaign.  
  • The Phoenix is yet to trail through 720 minutes of game time this season. 
  • Bisgrove has started six of the shutout efforts in goal for the Phoenix. She is the first Elon goalie in program history to record a shutout in six consecutive games. 
  • Hamner and Person combined for Elon's seventh shutout against South Carolina State.  
  • Bisgrove was the first goalkeeper in the country to reach six shutouts this season. She is currently tied for the most shutouts in the country.  
  • Bisgrove's six straight clean sheets are the most by a CAA women's soccer student-athlete since Hofstra's Krystal Robens posted seven in a row in 2007. 
  • With the six clean sheets this season, Bisgrove is up to 11.5 in her career, which is already the 9th most in program history through her 24 appearances.  
  • Elon is tied for first nationally in shutout percentage (.875) with Illinois and Tennessee.  
  • Elon's seven shutouts are also tied for the most in the country, along with Illinois, Tennessee and Louisville.   
  • The Phoenix leads the nation in goals against average (.125). Elon's .968 save percentage is the second best in the country, behind just Illinois.  
  • Bisgrove ranks in the top five among NCAA goalkeepers in save percentage (.966) and goals against average (.143).  
  • Jessica Hill has anchored Elon's backline this season, playing 704 of a possible 720 minutes. She has logged the full 90 minutes on seven occasions this season.  
Murdock's Hot Start  
  • Murdock leads the Phoenix with 10 points on the season behind three goals and four assists. 
  • The redshirt junior is tied with Gelhaus, Hoschek and Hellner for a team-high three goals on the campaign. Her 25 shot attempts and 14 shots on goal lead the Phoenix.  
  • Murdock also leads the team with four assists on the campaign. She has assisted on a goal for Elon in three of the last four games. 
  • Murdock scored in two of Elon's first three games this season against VCU and Gardner-Webb. She tallied her third goal of the campaign last week against South Carolina State.  
  • Murdock is up to 11 career goals, as she is one of three current Elon players, along with Brehio and Hoschek, with double-digit career goals as a Phoenix.    
 
GG   
  • Gelhaus, a preseason All-CAA selection, is third on the team with seven points this season. She has already matched her season total of seven points from a season ago through just eight games.    
  • The junior scored two goals in a 21-second span in Elon's 4-0 victory over VMI on Aug. 17. She also assisted on Murdock's game-winning tally against Gardner-Webb on Aug. 24  
  • Gelhaus found her third goal of the season last week against South Carolina State. She is one goal away from matching her career high of four, which she set in 2023.  
  • Gelhaus is fourth on the team with 12 shots, half of which have been on target. She has logged the fifth most minutes by Phoenix position players this season (579).   
 
The Great Gabby 
  • Hoschek, a preseason All-CAA honorable mention, is off to a strong start in 2025, as she is tied for the team lead in goals (3) and second on the team in points (8).  
  • The junior is coming off her second career brace last week against South Carolina State, as she scored two of Elon's first three goals in a 6-0 victory.  
  • On Aug. 28, Hoschek connected on a free kick for her first goal of the campaign, ricocheting the ball off the left post and past the Royals' goalkeeper. 
  • In the second half versus the Royals, Hoschek delivered the secondary assist on Hellner's header goal. It was the junior's second time recording a goal and assist in the same contest, with the other coming at Wofford on Sept. 2, 2024.  
  • Hoschek also tallied an assist in Elon's victory over VMI on Aug. 17, helping on the first of two Gelhaus goals.  
  • Hoschek has started six of eight games for Elon this season, logging 601 minutes. 
 
Hellner Heating Up 
  • With goals in back-to-back games, Hellner has joined a four-way tie for the team lead in goals with three. 
  • All three of Hellner's goals this season have come in the last five games. She has scored against Queens, George Mason and South Carolina State.  
  • Hellner scored Elon's first penalty kick goal of the season on Sept. 7 at George Mason.   
  • Hellner is third on the Phoenix with 14 shot attempts. She has logged 579 minutes in Elon's midfield, the fourth most minutes by an Elon position player.  
 
Balanced Attack  
  • Through the first eight games this season, Elon has had nine different scorers for its 18 goals. 
  • Murdock, Gelhaus, Hellner and Hoschek have all netted three goals on the season to lead the Phoenix.   
  • Two Elon players have converted their first career goals this season. Freshman Abby Brinker scored in the second half of the VMI win, with junior Jenna Abousaab finding her first career tally in the victory at Queens.  
  • Beck delivered the game-winning goal for Elon on Aug. 31 against High Point. She added her second of the season against South Carolina State last week.  
  • Brehio and junior Lauren McCauley are the other two goal scorers this season for the Phoenix.  
  • Additionally, 16 Elon players have recorded points on the campaign, with Green (2), Gia Milano (2), Brinker (1), Jessica Hill (1), Talia Feigin (1), Maya Abousaab (1), Lilly McFadden (1) and Megan Dwyer (1) all recording assists.  
 
New Look CAA Soccer  
 
  • Starting in 2025, the CAA will feature two divisions for women's soccer – a North and South Division.   
  • Elon is part of the South Division alongside Campbell, College of Charleston, Hampton, UNCW and William & Mary.   
  • The Phoenix will face all five South Division teams in the regular season along with four teams from the North Division.   
  • At the end of the regular season, the top three teams from each division will qualify for the CAA Championship. The top seed in each division will receive a by to the semifinals while the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds in both the North and South will clash in the quarterfinals.   
 
Scouting Hofstra 
  • The Pride enters Thursday's CAA opener with a 3-1-4 record on the campaign. Hofstra has tied four consecutive opponents, a streak that started Aug. 28 against FDU.  
  • Hofstra started the season 3-0-0 but has not won a match since defeating Columbia, 2-1, on Aug. 22. 
  • Manon Lebargy and Olivia Pearse lead the Pride with two goals each. Six other Hofstra players have tallied a goal this season. 
  • Hofstra ranks in the bottom half of the CAA with 10 goals on the season as a team. However, the Pride sits No. 5 in the conference with just nine goals allowed in eight games.  
  • Lilly Bailey has started all eight games in Hofstra's net, ranking No. 4 in the CAA in goals against average (1.14) and No. 6 in save percentage (.700).  
  • Hofstra is led by 20th year head coach Simon Riddiough.  
 
Scouting Stony Brook 
  • The defending CAA champions are off to a 5-2-1 start in 2025. The Seawolves defeated Yale, 5-3, in their most recent outing last week. 
  • Reilly Rich netted a hat trick in the win over Yale. Rich leads the CAA and is tied for third in the country with eight goals this season. She was named TopDrawer Soccer's National Player of the Week on Tuesday.   
  • Rich also has a pair of assists to lead the CAA and rank in the top nationally in points (18). 
  • Linn Beck (5), Hannah Maracina (3) and Leah Rifas (2) also have multiple goals this season for the Seawolves. Beck is tied for second in the conference in goals behind only Rich. 
  • Stony Brook is tied with Hampton for the most goals in the conference (22) this season. The Seawolves average 2.75 goals per contest, which leads the CAA. 
  • The Seawolves take 18.75 shots per game, second to only Hampton among CAA teams. 
  • Jona Hennings has started all matches in goal for Stony Brook this season. She has made 27 saves and boasts a 1.73 goals against average. 
  • Stony Brook is coming off a 14-4-3 campaign in 2024 that included a CAA Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.  
  • Stony Brook will face Campbell in its CAA opener Thursday night. 
  • The Seawolves are led by head coach Tobias Bischof, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the program.
