CHARLESTON, SC -- The College of Charleston Cougars defeated the Phoenix 7-0 on Thursday. The loss is the first of the year for Elon (5-1). Elon lost more than the match, however. In doubles competition, Chai Navawongse, the #2 singles player, sprained his ankle and may be out up to six weeks.
In singles competition Remy Nagel fell 6-3, 6-3 to Henrico DuPlessis, while Richard Dutton, who moved up to replace Navawongse, fell 6-4, 6-0 to Sagi Zakin. Justin Roberson was downed by Enal Omid 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Peter Van Graafeiland was dropped 6-2, 6-2 by Sandon Barth in the #4 spot. Mike Prelec fell 6-2, 6-1 to Bill Brehmer. In the final singles match, Chad York fell 6-2, 6-1 to Eric McColloch.
Remy Nagel and Navawongse were down 1-0 when the injury occrured. Dutton and Roberson were downed 8-5 by Omid and Barth, while Nick Belutty and Yord fell 8-2 to Brehmer and Mike Sutcliff.
Elon will continue their South Carolina tour tomorrow when the face Big South for Charleston Southern.
