Blue Devil Rally Falls Short in Phoenix Victory

ELON, NC – Duke rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning at Latham Park Sunday afternoon, but the explosion proved to be too little, too late as Elon prevailed 6-4 in the middle contest of a three-game series.

The exciting finish completed a suspended game between the two teams and evened the weekend set at one victory apiece. The Phoenix (7-4) held a 6-1 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning when play began Sunday, completing Saturday’s action that was halted at Jack Coombs Field due to inclement weather.

Elon starter Justin Weeks (1-1) saw his five and 2/3 innings of work from Saturday stand up to earn the victory. He allowed no earned runs and fanned four Blue Devils while surrendering just three hits and two walks.

Duke (10-5) starter Tim Layden (2-2) ended up with the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits in two and 2/3 innings Saturday. He also logged three bases on balls to go with one strikeout.

Elon, winner of five of its last six games, received key offensive performances from Jason Tuttle (2-for-4, run, 2 RBI, SB), Whit Bryant (1-for-4, run, 3 RBI, HR) and Jim Swenson (2-for-4, double).

The Blue Devils, who outhit the Phoenix 9-8 for the two-day contest, were led by Bryan Smith (1-for-2, run, 2 RBI, HR, SH) and Kevin Kelly (2-for-3, run, double). Duke received at least one hit from eight different players.

The rubber game of the annual weekend series is also being played Sunday afternoon at Latham Park.
