ELON, NC – Whit Bryant extended his hitting streak to 13 games as Elon pounded two-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton 12-4 Thursday afternoon at Latham Park.
Bryant went 3-for-4 with one run scored and another batted in as the Phoenix (12-4, 11-1 at Latham Park) won for the 10th time in 11 games, including the sixth in a row. Elon outhit the Tigers (2-9) by a 15-7 margin, but Princeton stranded 16 runners on base while Elon left seven. Both teams committed a pair of errors on the day.
Elon used seven pitchers, but it was starter Thomas Dodson (1-0) who earned the victory, his first of the season. Dodson worked five innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and four walks while fanning six Tigers.
Princeton starter Brian Biegen (0-1), who was chased after the second frame, was charged with loss. He surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in two innings while walking two and fanning two.
The Phoenix soared to a commanding 12-0 cushion after three innings, putting up five runs in the first frame and seven more in the third. The Tigers scored once in the fourth and three times in seventh.
Elon received key offensive performances from Taylor Stewart (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI, double, HR), Jim Swenson (1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, HR, BB), Ross Cook (1-for-3, run, RBI, HR, BB) and Jason Tuttle (2-for-4, 2 runs, SB) as 23 Phoenix players saw action. Tyler Hassen (1-for-3, RBI, double) and Ryan Eldridge (1-for-5, run, 2 RBI, double) led seven different Tigers who collected one hit apiece.
This weekend, Latham Park sets the stage for the battle of the birds when Elon opens Big South Conference action with the defending regular season league champion Winthrop Eagles. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at noon while Sunday’s game starts at 1 p.m.
