Baseball Signs Four for 2003

ELON, NC -- Elon University baseball coach Mike Kennedy announced the signings of four players to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday afternoon. Matthew Chastain (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Christian School), Peter Hellberg (Devon, PA/Conestoga H.S.), Chris Price (Asheville, NC/T.C. Roberson) and Stephen Woodlief (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman H.S.) will all be joining the Phoenix next year.

Chastain, a 5-11, 185-pound pitcher/infielder, has been named to the all-conference team as well as the All-Mecklenburg Second Team. He was also selected to play in the State Games and his team won the conference title in both 2000 and 2001. Chastain played for Greg Simmons at Charlotte Christian School. Matthew is the son of Rick and Deb Chastain.

Hellberg, a 6-3, 215-pound pitcher, was a member of the Goodwill Games team that played in Austrailia this past winter. In the High School World Series in Canton, Ohio (July, 2001), Hellberg pitched a two-hit shutout. His junior season, he compiled a perfect 5-0 record with an ERA under 3.00. Last season his Conestoga High team won the league title with a 24-2 record. That year they won 24-straight games and were ranked first in the state of Pennsylvania until early June, 2001. Peter is the son of Richard Hellberg and Joyce Hellberg Jeuell and played for coach Darien Threadgill.

Price, a 6-0, 189-pound outfielder/firstbaseman, earned All-State honors in 2001 and was named the Player of the Year for the MAC that same season. In 2001 he hit .493 with 39 RBI and seven homers. He has also earned All-Western North Carolina First Team and Times-News All-Area First Team honors. Price was a participant in the 2001 State Games. He has helped guide his team to three MAC titles and two appearances in the state finals, including one championship. Chris is the son of Walker and Margaret Price and played for coach Tom Smith at T.C. Roberson High.

Woodlief, a 5-11, 170-pound shortstop, has earned First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region and All-Metro honors while playing for Ken Moore's Douglas Freeman High team. He participated in the 2001 Virginia Commonwealth Games and was named the best junior baseball player at Freeman last year. The four-year varsity starter has helped guide his team to a 2001 District title as well a 2001 Central Region Runner-up finish. They also appeared in the state quarterfinals last season. Stephen is the son of Graham and Marilyn Woodlief.
