Seahawks Blank Phoenix Women's Soccer

WILMINGTON, NC -- Sophomore forward Caroline Renkin scored a hat trick and freshman goalkeeper Rachael Wilson registered her first career shutout as UNC Wilmington blanked Elon, 3-0, in women’s soccer action Tuesday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 3-1 on the season with their third straight victory. Elon dipped to 1-2 in three matches.

Renkin, who had failed to score in the first three outings this fall, took a pass from Erin Gonzales in the 10th minute and staked the Seahawks to a 1-0 edge at 9:20. The scored remained 1-0 at intermission following a defense-dominated first period.

Renkin connected on a pair of goals in the second half as the Seahawks broke the game open. She launched a 25-yard strike at 60:07 on a pass from Kristine Mengle and completed the hat trick at 62:20, with Gonzales again assisting on the goal.

Wilson had two saves in picking up her first shutout. Elon starting goalie Kara Zagol made four saves and surrendered all three goals. Beth O'Connor played the last 10:44 in net, allowing no goals and grabbing two saves for the Phoenix.

Elon will travel to Jacksonville on Friday for a 4:30 contest against the Dolphins in their opening match of the Brine-Dennis Violet Memorial Tournament.
