Simons Resigns as Elon Men's Basketball Coach

ELON, NC – Mark Simons submitted his resignation as Elon University head men’s basketball coach effective immediately Wednesday afternoon.

“Mark Simons is a man of character and quality values who has guided us through some challenging times in our national and conference transitions,” said Dr. Alan White, Elon Director of Athletics. “I have nothing but praise for his efforts, attitude and mentorship. I certainly wish the best for him in all of his professional and personal pursuits.”

Simons coached the Phoenix to a 109-169 record in 10 seasons at Elon, including 47-66 in the program’s four official NCAA Division I campaigns. The Phoenix finished 12-15 this season after a 68-66 first-round overtime loss to eventual champion UNC Asheville on March 4 in the 2003 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Championship.

“I truly appreciate my 10 years here and the opportunity afforded me by Alan White,” said Simons. “I will miss my relationships within the Elon community and especially my relationship with the players. I wish the very best to all of my friends and associates.”

The search process for his replacement will begin immediately.
