49ers Snap Elon Winning Streak

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Charlotte 49ers won their second-straight game and snapped Elon's eight-game winning streak as they defeated the Phoenix 8-6 behind a seven-run fourth inning. The Phoenix fell to 16-9-1 while Charlotte improved to 9-11.

Charlotte plated the game's first run when Brian York scored on an Elon felding error in the second inning.

For the second time in two nights, the 49ers exploded with a big inning when they scored seven runs on five hits in the fourth inning. The big blow of the frame was a two-run, two-out double off the left field wall by Brian Scafe (2-for-2, R, 2 RBI).

The Phoenix would finally get on the board in the fifth inning when Drew Davis (2-for-3, 2 R), who reached on a double down the left field line, scored on Paul Bennett's (2-for-5, RBI) single to right center.

Elon would rally in the ninth, making the game interesting. The Phoenix scored five runs in the frame. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Ernie Roselle (1-for-1, R, 2 RBI). Roselle sent a two-run single to left. George Brandner (1-for-1, RBI) and Holt Montgomery (1-for-2, R, RBI) also had run-scoring hits in the inning. The game ended when Mike Fratoe (1-for-5) flew out to right with the tying run on first base.

Charlotte's Mark Ferguson (1-2) collected his first win of the season after holding the Phoenix scoreless for three innings. Erik Walker claimed his second save of the year, throwing the last 1/3 of an inning.

Fratoe suffered the defeat for Elon, falling to 0-1 on the year. He allowed four earned runs on three hits in 3 and 1/3 innings of work. Fratoe also walked six and fanned five.

The Phoenix will return home to Latham Park for a three-game set this weekend with future Big South member Birmingham-Southern. The series will begin on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with games at 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
