Scoggin Lifts Eagles Over Phoenix

ROCK HILL, SC -- Third baseman David Scoggin belted three home runs and drove in nine runs on the day to lead Winthrop to a doubleheader sweep of Elon Saturday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, SC.  Winthrop won game one 7-4 and game two 8-2.

With two on and nobody out in the top of the ninth, Scoggin hit a monster home run to left field to give Winthrop a 7-4 win in game one of the doubleheader.  It was his second home run of the day.

Scoggin drove in all seven of the Eagles’ runs in the first game.  He hit a sacrifice fly in the first and hit two three-run home runs, one in the third inning and one in the ninth inning.

Elon scored one in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth to round out the scoring.

Jeremy Plexico picked up the win, coming in to strike out Elon first baseman Gary Morris with a runner on second and two outs in the ninth inning.

Lance Cole (2-1) gave up three runs in two innings of work to take the loss for the Phoenix.  He also walked two batters.

In game two, the Eagles used a six-run sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie as they went on to defeat the Phoenix 8-2.

With one out in the sixth, the Eagles rattled off five consecutive singles to take a 4-2 lead.  Daniel Carte, Scoggin, Jacob Dempsey, Matt Repec and Grant Neidenfeuhr all singled for the Eagles.  With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Mark Schmidt doubled to drive in two and push Winthrop’s lead to 6-2.  Catcher Alan Robbins doubled down the left field to drive in two and give the Eagles an 8-2 lead.

Plexico (8-2) shut down the Phoenix in the seventh, yielding only one hit, to give Winthrop an 8-2 win over Elon.  It was Plexico’s second victory of the day. 

In the game, Plexico gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings of work.  He struck out nine and walked three.  It was third complete game of the year.

Tyson Blocker (4-4) gave up seven runs (five earned) in five and one-third innings to take the loss for Elon.  He struck out four and hit one batter.

Trailing 1-0 in the first, Scoggin hit a two-run home run off Blocker to give Winthrop a 2-1 lead.  It was his third home run of the day.

Elon catcher Barry Tejeda hit a solo home run off Plexico in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the Eagles scored six runs in the sixth en route to an 8-2 win.

Winthrop improved to 26-14 overall and 10-1 in Big South play with the doubleheader sweep.  The Eagles have won three straight games, and 16 out of their last 20 contests.  Winthrop has also won 10 straight Big South Conference games.

Elon fell to 23-15-1 overall and 8-5 in league play with the pair of losses. 

The Eagles have defeated the Phoenix three straight times, dating back to May 23, 2002.
