ELON, N.C. -- Appalachian State's Whiney Southard scored her eighth goal of the season in the 25th minute to lead the Mountaineers to a 1-0 Southern Conference women's soccer victory over host Elon on Senior Day at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon. The win upped ASU's record to 10-8-1, 5-5-1 SoCon and secured the Mountaineers the sixth seed in the upcoming league tournament. Elon fell to 5-11-1, 4-6-1 and had its four-match winning streak snapped. The Phoenix will have to await other results to see if it qualifies for the tournament.
Southard's shot was the only shot on goal for Appalachian State in the first stanza, but gave the Mountaineers all they would need to edge out the Phoenix. The goal came at 24:49 off assists from Jennifer Rudy and Dana Murphy.
Elon had numerous chances to score, twice hitting the post and twice having ASU defenders clear shots that had beaten keeper Breland Meany.
On the day, both teams took 13 shots and Elon held a slim 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams managed four corners.
Meany made four saves to record the shutout. Elon's Kara Zagol recorded three saves.
