Phoenix Opens NCAA Tournament At No. 11 Duke

Elon Set For First NCAA Tournament Game Since 2021

ELON – The CAA champion Elon University women's soccer team (11-2-7) will compete in its third NCAA Tournament game Friday night, as the Phoenix travels to Durham to face No. 11 Duke (13-4-1) for a first-round encounter.

The Duke Series
  • Duke leads the all-time head-to-head against the Phoenix, 6-0-0.
  • Elon and Duke have met in an NCAA Tournament match before, with the Blue Devils winning, 3-1, in a first-round clash in 1999.
  • This will be the first meeting between Elon and Duke since Aug. 26, 2018. The Blue Devils defeated the Phoenix in that contest, 3-0.
  • All the previous six matches between the Phoenix and Blue Devils have been played in Durham.
 
CAA Champions
  • Elon won its second CAA championship Sunday, defeating Stony Brook in penalty kicks to earn the title.
  • The Phoenix, which won its only other CAA title in the spring 2021 season, won three straight road matches as the No. 3 seed in the South Division to win the conference tournament.
  • Elon won penalty shootouts in both the CAA semifinal against UNCW and final versus Stony Brook to win the championship. The score of both shootouts was 6-5.
  • Against the Seawolves in Sunday's championship match, Isa Murdock scored first for Elon, striking in the 68th minute off an Ashlee Brehio assist. Stony Brook tied the contest off an Elon own goal with 1:42 remaining to force overtime.
  • After two scoreless overtime periods, the match was decided in a penalty shootout. Ava Hellner, Brehio, Lauren McCauley, Jess Beck and Isabel DiPrima all converted for the Phoenix in the first six rounds.
  • Katie Bisgrove made a pair of saves, including one in the seventh round that gave freshman Abby Brinker an opportunity to win it for the Phoenix. Brinker converted to win Elon the CAA title.
  • The victory over the defending CAA champion Seawolves punched Elon's ticket to the NCAA Tournament as the conference's automatic bid.
 
Semifinal Thriller
  • Elon advanced past UNCW, the CAA South regular season champion, in the CAA semifinals on Nov. 2 on penalty kicks, 6-5.
  • The game ended in a 0-0 tie but featured 42 combined shots, with Elon holding a 24-18 edge.
  • The Phoenix went a perfect 6-for-6 on penalty kicks. Gabby Hoschek, Hellner, Brehio, McCauley, Beck and DiPrima all converted for the Phoenix before UNCW hit the crossbar on its final attempt to end the game.
  • Bisgrove made a career-high 12 saves for her third consecutive shutout. She became the first Elon goalie to register double-digit saves in a match since Anna Hamner did so on Oct. 15, 2023, against Stony Brook.
  • Hellner, Hoschek, Megan DwyerGrace Gelhaus, Jessica Hill and Alexis Pierce all logged the full 110 minutes for the Phoenix. Murdock also surpassed 100 minutes, playing a career-high 104.  
  • This was Elon's first victory in penalty kicks since 2001, when the Phoenix defeated Coastal Carolina 4-3 in a shootout in the Big South Tournament.  
 
Quarterfinal Victory
  • Elon kicked off its CAA Tournament run on Oct. 30 with a 1-0 victory at William & Mary, the No. 2 seed from the South Division.
  • Brehio scored the lone goal of the contest in the fifth minute. Hill sent the ball into the box off a free kick, and after slipping past a defender, Brehio nudged the ball into the net for her second career CAA Tournament goal.
  • The Phoenix managed its one-goal lead over the next 85 minutes of play. Bisgrove made six saves in net for her eighth shutout of the campaign.
  • William & Mary finished with an 18-11 advantage in shot attempts but both teams had six shots on goal. This was the sixth time this season Elon has won a match when being outshot by its opponent.
  • The win snapped William & Mary's seven-match home winning streak. Elon is just the second team to beat the Tribe at home this season and the first since Loyola Maryland on Aug. 21.
 
CAA Charge 
  • Elon went 4-0-2 in its final six regular-season CAA matches to earn the final tournament spot from the South Division.
  • The streak began on Oct. 2 with a 1-1 tie against CAA South champion UNCW. Elon then reeled off four straight wins against Campbell, Drexel, Towson and Hampton before tying Charleston in its regular-season finale.
  • The Phoenix picked up 14 of the last 18 possible points in CAA play after earning just one of the first nine available points to start conference play.  
  • Gelhaus scored the game-winning goal in three of Elon's last four wins. The winning tally against Campbell on Oct. 5 came in the 85th minute of a 2-1 victory.  
  • Elon outscored its opponents in the final six matches of the regular season, 13-6.
  • The Phoenix entered the final week of the regular season in fourth place in the CAA South standings. Elon's four points vaulted the Phoenix ahead of Charleston for the final tournament berth.
 
Elon In The NCAA Tournament
  • This will be Elon's third appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.
  • The last appearance for the Phoenix came in the spring 2021 season. Elon fell, 1-0, to Milwaukee at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
  • Elon's other NCAA Tournament game was against the Blue Devils in 1999 after the Phoenix won the Big South title.
 
Postseason Accolades
  • Elon had five representatives on the All-CAA teams, which were released by the conference on Oct. 29.
  • Gelhaus headlined Elon's honorees, as the junior took home CAA Defender of the Year. She is the first Phoenix to earn the award.
  • Joining Gelhaus on the All-CAA First Team was Hoschek. It was the first time for both Gelhaus and Hoschek making the First Team.
  • Murdock earned her first All-CAA nod with a spot on the Second Team. Bisgrove also secured a spot on the Third Team.
  • Freshman midfielder Miranda Dumornay rounded out Elon's honorees by making the All-CAA Rookie Team. She has made eight starts on the season, registering three points.
 
MVP
  • Bisgrove was named Most Outstanding Player of the CAA Tournament after anchoring Elon's run to the conference title.
  • Elon's sophomore goalkeeper recorded double-digit saves in both the semifinal and championship match. Her 12 saves against UNCW in the semifinal were a career best.
  • In total, Bisgrove made 28 saves during the three-game tournament. She also stopped a pair of penalty kicks in Elon's 6-5 shootout victory against Stony Brook.
  • Bisgrove has not conceded a goal other than an own goal since Oct. 23 against Hampton. She has four clean sheets in Elon's five matches since.
  • Bisgrove was the first goalkeeper in the country to reach six shutouts this season.
  • Bisgrove's six straight clean sheets were the most by a CAA women's soccer student-athlete since Hofstra's Krystal Robens posted seven in a row in 2007. 
  • Bisgrove's nine shutouts this season are the most among CAA goalies. The sophomore is up to 14.5 in her career, which is already the fifth most in program history through her 35 appearances. 
  • The nine shutouts are also the most in a single season by an Elon goalkeeper in the program's Division I era. The last Phoenix goalie to have eight or more in a season was Lauren Ounjian, who also recorded eight in 1988.  
 
GG   
  • Gelhaus, the CAA Defender of the Year, led all CAA defenders in points and goals this season with career highs in both.
  • The defender is second on the Phoenix with 17 points this season. She notched nine points (4g, 1a) in Elon's final five matches of the regular season, which included three game-winning tallies.
  • Gelhaus is tied for fifth in the CAA with her seven goals on the campaign, with four of the goals coming against CAA opponents.
  • The junior scored two goals in a 21-second span in Elon's 4-0 non-conference victory over VMI on Aug. 17. She is one of two Elon players, along with Hoschek, to record a brace this season.  
  • Gelhaus is third on the team with 34 shots and has the best shot percentage (0.206) of any Phoenix with nine or more attempts this season.
  • Gelhaus has logged the fourth most minutes by Phoenix position players this season (1,603) and has gone the full distance on nine occasions. She played all 310 minutes of Elon's CAA Tournament.
  • Gelhaus was named to the CAA All-Tournament team for her performance in Elon's three victories.  
 
Murdock Making Plays
  • Murdock, an All-CAA Second Team selection, leads the Phoenix with a career-best 20 points, with seven goals and six assists on the campaign. She is currently tied for third in the CAA in points.  
  • The redshirt junior has seven goals, tied with Gelhaus for the most on the Phoenix. Her 50 shot attempts and 24 shots on goal both lead the team.
  • Murdock also leads the Phoenix and ranks No. 4 in the conference with a career-high six assists on the campaign. She has registered a goal or assist in 10 of 20 appearances this season.  
  • Murdock scored in two of Elon's first three games this season against VCU and Gardner-Webb. She tallied her third goal of the campaign on Sept. 10 against South Carolina State and delivered her fourth on Sept. 27 at William & Mary. 
  • Murdock is up to 15 career goals, as she is one of four current Elon players, along with Brehio, Gelhaus and Hoschek, with double-digits as a Phoenix.    
  • Murdock earned the first CAA weekly honor of her career on Oct. 20, taking home CAA Offensive Player of the Week. She scored six points (2g, 2a) in Elon's wins over Drexel and Towson. 
  • Murdock earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament Team after scoring Elon's goal against Stony Brook. She played all but 15 minutes in Elon's three tournament matches.
 
The Great Gabby 
  • Hoschek, who was named to the All-CAA First Team last week, is having the best statistical season of her career in 2025.  
  • The junior is third on the Phoenix in points (16) and goals (5). The 16 points are a career best.  
  • Four of the junior's five goals this season have come directly off free kicks. The most recent came in Elon's victory on Oct. 23 at Hampton.
  • In Elon's CAA opener on Sept. 18 at Hofstra, Hoschek scored the tying goal directly off a deep free kick with exactly one minute remaining to secure a 2-2 result for the Phoenix.
  • The midfielder delivered her second career brace on Sept. 10 against South Carolina State, as she scored two of Elon's first three goals in a 6-0 victory.  
  • On Aug. 28 at Queens, Hoschek connected on a free kick for her first goal of the campaign, ricocheting the ball off the left post and past the Royals' goalkeeper. 
  • In the second half versus the Royals, Hoschek delivered the secondary assist on Hellner's header goal. It was the junior's second time recording a goal and assist in the same contest, with the other coming at Wofford on Sept. 2, 2024.  
  • Hoschek has six assists this season, with four coming in the last eight matches.
  • Hoschek has started 17 of 20 games for Elon this season, logging 1, 560 minutes. 
 
Historic Shutout Streak 
  • Elon set a program record earlier this season with seven consecutive clean sheets, surpassing the previous record of six that was set in 1986, Elon's inaugural season.   
  • Elon went just over 716 minutes of game time without conceding a goal, a stretch that began in the second half at VCU on Aug. 14 and ended in the second half on Sept. 18 versus Hofstra. The Phoenix was just shy of 12 hours without allowing a goal before the Pride ended the streak.  
  • Bisgrove started six of those shutout efforts in goal for the Phoenix. She is the first Elon goalie in program history to record a shutout in six consecutive games.  
  • Anna Hamner and Naomi Person combined for Elon's seventh shutout against South Carolina State.  
  • The Phoenix leads the CAA and ranks top 20 in the nation in goals against average (.636). Elon's .890 save percentage is also the best in the conference and No. 3 nationally.  
  • Elon currently holds a plus-23 goal differential, the best in the CAA.  
  • Hill has anchored Elon's backline this season, playing 1,805 of a possible 1,840 minutes. She has logged the full match on 17 occasions, including all 310 minutes in the CAA Tournament.
  • Pierce and Dwyer have also been key contributors on Elon's backline this season. Pierce is second among Elon field players with 1,713 minutes played this season, with Dwyer having logged 1,457 minutes.
 
Shlee Scoring 
  • Brehio scored the biggest goal of Elon's season so far, netting the game-winning tally in the fifth minute in the Phoenix's 1-0 CAA Tournament quarterfinal victory against William & Mary on Oct. 30.
  • The senior midfielder added an assist in the championship game against Stony Brook on Sunday. She has six points in her five CAA Tournament matches after racking up three points in last season's tournament.
  • Brehio is up to 19 career goals, as she is Elon's active career goal-scoring leader
  • Brehio has four goals and a career-best 13 points on the campaign. She has reached double-digit points in all four of her seasons with the Phoenix.
  • Her 13 points are the fourth most on the Phoenix this season. Only Murdock (6) and Hoschek (6) have more assists than Brehio (5) on the campaign.
  • Brehio earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team after helping on both Elon's goals in the event and going 2-for-2 in penalty kicks. 
 
Balanced Attack  
  • Elon has 12 different scorers for its 36 goals in the regular season. 
  • Gelhaus and Murdock lead the Phoenix in goals with seven apiece. Hoschek (5) is a close third. Beck and Brehio both have four goals, followed by Hellner with three.
  • Three Elon players have converted their first career goals this season – freshmen Abby Brinker and Dumornay, along with junior Jenna Abousaab
  • Lauren McCauleyTalia Feigin and Dwyer are the other goal scorers this season for the Phoenix with one apiece.  
  • Additionally, 17 Elon players have recorded points on the campaign, with Jordan Green (2), Gia Milano (2), Hill (2), Maya Abousaab (1) and Lilly McFadden (1) all recording assists.  
 
Scouting Duke
  • Duke enters the NCAA Tournament with a 13-4-1 record. The Blue Devils went 7-3-0 in the ACC and lost in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament to Notre Dame.
  • The Blue Devils are a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They are ranked No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll.
  • Duke went 9-1-1 at Koskinen Stadium this season, with the lone home loss coming against Wake Forest.
  • The Blue Devils are top 15 nationally in scoring offense with 2.56 goals per contest. Their 46 goals are tied for the fourth most among ACC teams.
  • Mia Minestrella leads the Blue Devils with 12 goals with Kat Rader close behind with 10. Both have 28 points to pace the Blue Devils.
  • Mia Ollaro leads the Blue Devils with 10 assists this season. Devin Lynch also has seven helpers to rank third on the team behind Ollaro and Rader.
  • Six Blue Devils have reached double-digit points on the campaign – Minestrella, Rader, Lynch, Avery Oder, Ollaro and Julia Saunicheva.
  • Caroline Dysart has started 17 of Duke's 18 matches this season. She has made 47 saves and has a 1.14 goals against average.
  • Duke is led by first-year head coach Kieran Hall. He took over the program this year following the retirement of previous head coach Robbie Church at the conclusion of last season.
