NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Elon guard Matt Nowlin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) has been named to the 2003-04 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team as selected by the league's men's basketball coaches.
Nowlin – who finished as runner-up to Furman's Quan Prowell for Southern Conference Sports Media Association Freshman of the Year honors – canned a conference-best 75 three-point field goals (a league-leading 2.68 per game) on his way to 10.1 points per game, the third-best output on the Phoenix squad (11-17 overall, 7-9 SoCon). He was one of just three Elon players to compete in all 28 contests this season, starting 10.
Nowlin averaged 25.3 minutes per game and fired a team-high 84.4 percent from the free throw line during the regular season. Elon enters the 2004 Southern Conference Championship as the third-seeded squad in the North Division, opening tournament play against The Citadel Wednesday at the North Charleston Coliseum.
