Eagles Nip Phoenix in Men's Tennis

ELON, N.C. – Georgia Southern snatched the doubles point and then split the singles matches to slip past Elon 4-3 in Southern Conference men’s tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Eagles (8-16 overall, 3-6 Southern Conference) out-clawed the Phoenix (5-5, 2-3) for the eventually decisive doubles point, capturing two of the three matches in nail-biting fashion. After Elon’s Pramote Malasitt and Eric Haase dispatched Danie van den Heever and Vincent Patry 8-4 at No. 1, GSU bounced back to score when Doruk Baglan and Lasha Janashia edged Austin Fenn and Justin Roberson 9-7 at No. 2 and Germano Knorr and Tom Green overcame Thomas Rohof and Sebastian Bredberg 9-8 at No. 3.

In singles, the Eagles logged wins at No. 2 (Patry over Haase 6-1, 6-1), No. 5 (Stephen Dubienski over Fenn 7-5, 6-3) and No. 6 (Green over Bredberg 6-3, 6-4). The Phoenix won at No. 1 (Malasitt over Baglan 6-3, 6-1), No. 3 (Rohof over van den Heever 1-6, 6-3, 7-5) and No. 4 (Roberson over Janashia 7-6, 7-5).

GSU visits SoCon foe UNC Greensboro at noon Sunday. Elon returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when it hosts league opponent Furman at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
