Phoenix Falters in Second Straight Double Overtime Game

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Susan Persson scored twice, including the overtime winner, as Campbell University defeated Elon 2-1 in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Phoenix fell to 1-5-0 on the year while the Camels improved to 2-1-2.

The winning goal came in the second overtime period at 102:22 when Persson beat Elon keeper Kara Zagol one-on-one from close range for her second tally of the game.

Persson’s first goal, a left-footed shot from 15 yards away, came in the 72nd minute of play off a lead pass from Danielle Mandela.

With the Camels leading 1-0, Elon got the equalizer in the 83rd minute when a free kick from Tina Longo slipped through the hands of CU keeper Erin Switalski.

Campbell had an opportunity to break the tie three minutes after Longo’s goal when Tracy Taddonio’s 20-yard free kick hit the cross bar.

Elon almost scored the game’s first goal when Jenna Wheeler’s shot hit the bar with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

The match was the third overtime game of the season for both squads and the second consecutive OT loss for Elon. The Camels have one win and two ties, while the Phoenix have one win and two losses in matches that go to extra periods.

The win for CU is only the second in seven all-time meetings against Elon and ends a three-match win streak held by the Phoenix in the series. Campbell’s only other win was in 1997, a 2-1 decision in Buies Creek.

Both teams next take the field this coming Friday as Elon hosts Butler at 4:00 p.m., and the Camels travel to East Carolina for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
