ELON, N.C. – Wofford swept through all six singles matches and all three doubles matches for a 7-0 triumph over Elon in the Southern Conference women’s tennis opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Terriers (3-4 overall, 1-0 Southern Conference) received doubles victories from Ellen Rogers and Sarah Shelley at No. 1 (8-3 over Evin Prelec and Kelly Fleck), Laura Lynn Williams and Delaine Hare at No. 2 (8-4 over Elizabeth Kernodle and Melissa Holland) and Adriane Hodges and Tara Hartness at No. 3 (8-3 over Molly Cade and Alli Benton).
In singles play, Rogers overcame Prelec 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1, Shelley defeated Fleck 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, Williams staved off Kernodle 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3, Hare beat Holland 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, Hartness slipped past Diana Pulupa 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-4 at No. 5 and Hodges downed Cade 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
Wofford hosts Gardner-Webb in a non-league match at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Elon (1-2, 0-1) returns to action when Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State visits the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Friday.
