FARMVILLE, Va. – Elon claimed five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches on its way to capturing a 6-1 nonconference men's tennis victory at Longwood Friday afternoon at the Lancer Courts.
The win snapped a six-match losing streak for the Phoenix (2-6). It also represented Elon's first road victory of the season in three trips after previous losses at No. 41 South Carolina and at No. 25 North Carolina.
The Phoenix swept through the first five singles spots as Pramote Malasitt (7-1) defeated Tobias Guennel 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Austin Fenn (5-3) rallied past Rashko Patnikov 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 at No. 2, Sebastian Bredberg (4-4) overcame Chris Newman 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3, Brian Edmundson (1-4) posted his first college win 6-4, 6-1 over Mani Barajas-Alexander at No. 4 and Kyle Smialek (3-5) dispatched Ian Young 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5.
Elon took the doubles point when Malasitt and Fenn (4-3) conquered Patnikov and Young 8-1 at No. 1 and Bredberg and Memory (1-2) staved off Newman and Ross McBee for an 8-6 triumph at No. 3.
Longwood (0-4) notched a victory at No. 6 singles when McBee edged Alex Garrett 7-6, 1-6, 7-6. The Lancers also won at No. 2 doubles where Guennel and Barajas-Alexander held off Edmundson and Smialek 8-4.
The Phoenix will return to action Saturday with a 6 p.m. visit to nonleague foe Liberty. Longwood also hits the road Saturday, visiting Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m.
