The Gold got things started with a four run first with senior Robert Rodebaugh delivering a run-scoring single up the middle on a three-two offering from freshman Daniel Britt. Later in the inning senior Drew Davis delivered a two-out, two-RBI double and later scored when senior Zach Booker added a double of his own.
The Cardinal threatened to make it a game with a three-run first of its own. Sophomore Chris Dove reached on an infield single and later scored on a bloop single to right off the bat of senior Ryan Addison. Freshman Ryan Adams scored Addison with a double to left to cut the lead in half. Freshman Mike Melillo added a two out double to left to make it 4-3 after one.
The Gold would tally single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to start to pull away. Shady defense by the Cardinal (five errors) hurt their effort to stay in the game.
With four runs in the top of the fifth, the Gold left little doubt about the outcome. Rodebaugh hit a two out grand slam to put the game out of reach.
Ryan Basham settled in nicely and shut down the Cardinal on just two hits from the second thru the fifth innings.
The Gold added three runs in the sixth on three hits, an error, two base on balls, and a hit batter. The Cardinal rounded out the scoring in the bottom half of the sixth adding three runs on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Chris Machado and a two RBI single from fellow freshman Harry Austin. The game was called before the start of the seventh inning due to rain.
