Elon Falls to No. 11 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 11th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team bested Elon University 7-0 Saturday night at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, improving the Tar Heels' season record to 9-2.

North Carolina swept all three doubles matches and all six singles flights from Elon (2-3). In doubles action, the No. 11 duo of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long dispatched Evin Prelec and Kelly Fleck 8-1 at No. 1 while the No. 50 pairing of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith defeated Melissa Holland and Whitney Butcher 8-0 at No. 2 and the team of Alexandra Jurewitz and Laura Reichert downed Elizabeth Kernodle and Alli Benton 8-0 at No. 3.

In singles play, No. 26 Long foiled Prelec 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, No. 48 Caitlin Collins knocked off Fleck 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Fanjoy ousted Kernodle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, Reichert beat Holland 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Jurewitz decisioned Butcher 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Hanes Harris upended Benton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Phoenix will host Gardner-Webb at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Tar Heels are back in action against N.C. State at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
