Elon Continues Winning Ways at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Elon claimed eight of the nine matches Saturday afternoon en route to a 6-1 non-league men's tennis triumph over Coastal Carolina – for its 10th victory in 11 contests – at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

The Phoenix (10-3) swept the three doubles bouts from the Chanticleers (11-4) and then proceeded to capture five of the six singles matches. Elon, 5-17 last season, has already doubled its win total from the 2005 campaign.

Elon received singles victories by Damon Gooch (over David Mellis 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1), Sebastian Bredberg (over Simon Taylor 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3), Gustaf Asplund (over Andy Caress 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4), Austin Fenn (over Richard Redding 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 5) and Kevin Colin (over Brian Dowis 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 6). At No. 2, CCU's Elliott Quibell edged Anuwat Dalodom 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

In doubles action, Gooch and Fenn topped Quibell and Redding 8-3 at No. 1, Dalodom and Asplund foiled Caress and Taylor 8-6 at No. 2 and Colin and Bredberg downed Dowis and Mellis 8-3 at No. 3.

"Elon is the strongest team we've played this season," said Coastal Carolina head coach Chris Powers. "They were ready to play today."

The Phoenix will return to Southern Conference play with a 1 p.m. match at College of Charleston Sunday. The Chants host non-conference opponent Ohio State at 2 p.m. Monday.
