CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Elon sophomore Deanna Bailey staved off Memphis’ Marjorie Ondeck 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of women’s main draw singles action Friday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships. Bailey’s victory marks the first-ever win in the tournament’s main draw by a Phoenix player.
The 2007 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and Elon’s first-ever First Team All-Southern Conference women’s tennis player, Bailey was eliminated by fifth-seeded Reka Zslinszka of Duke 6-0, 6-0 in a second-round meeting Saturday morning.
Paige Kensrue also represented the Phoenix in main draw action, dropping her first-round match to Wake Forest’s Katarina Reveche 6-2, 6-2.
In the second round of doubles play, Bailey and partner Jenn Tucci were eliminated by Wake Forest’s fifth-seeded duo of Alex Hirsch and Sasha Kulikova 8-4.
Elon will return to dual match action this winter, looking to build upon last season’s success. Last spring, the Phoenix, despite possessing just one senior, finished 13-10 and fourth in the SoCon – both program bests since joining the NCAA Division I level nine seasons ago.
