Wahl Pushes Phoenix Past Spartans

ELON, N.C. – Hayley Wahl staved off Valerie Behr 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 singles, lifting Elon to a 5-2 Southern Conference women’s tennis triumph over UNC Greensboro Wednesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

“I am so very proud of our team and the way they competed,” Elon coach Elizabeth Perry said. “They did a tremendous job today.”

The Phoenix (9-8 overall, 3-2 SoCon) secured the doubles point when Wahl and Kelley Moore ousted Behr and Jessica Eblen 8-3 at No. 2 and Whitney Butcher and Alli Benton overcame Whitney Miles and Courtney Akel 9-8 (7-4) at No. 3.

The Spartans (7-8, 2-3) recorded a victory at No. 1 doubles when Arielle Von Strolley and Erica Zabkar outlasted Jenn Tucci and Deanna Bailey 9-8 (7-4).

Moore toppled Miles 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to extend the Elon edge to 2-0, but Akel’s 6-4, 6-3 win over Francie Rudolph at No. 4 cut UNCG’s deficit in half. Butcher beat Eblen 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 to set up Wahl’s match-clinching win.

Von Strolley out-dueled Bailey 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1, scoring the Spartans’ second point. Tucci rallied past Zabkar 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 to determine the final margin.

College of Charleston visits Elon at 2 p.m. Friday before stopping by UNC Greensboro Saturday.
