BOONE, N.C. - The Elon softball team fell to Appalachian State 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the ASU Softball Stadium as the Mountaineers completed the three-game Southern Conference sweep of the Phoenix.
Appalachian State moves to 15-26 overall and 7-5 in the Southern Conference while Elon falls to 22-21 and 6-6 in the league.
The Mountaineers started the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsay Glover reached on an error and stole second base before a double from Brittany Gaston sent her home to put ASU ahead 1-0. With runners on first and second, Kristyn Hurt singled to center field to score Gaston and give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
Elon responded in the top of the second inning. Laurin Smith knocked a single to left field before Brandi Jones ripped a home run out of centerfield to knot the game, 2-2.
But the Mountaineers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Ashley Gaston led off with a double down the left field line before she stole third and went home on a throwing error by the catcher. Danielle Peters then knocked an in-the-park home run down the right field line to give ASU a 4-2 advantage.
Appalachian State added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when an RBI double by Brittany Gaston sent Glover home to put the Mountaineers ahead 5-2.
Kayla Richardson (5-7) picked up the win for the Mountaineers after tossing a complete game and giving up two runs on seven hits while retiring six batters. Samantha Schroeder (0-6) suffered the loss after throwing six innings and giving up five runs (two earned) on 10 hits while striking out two batters.
Debbie Zeigler and Paige Goss each posted two hits for the Phoenix while Jones posted two RBI. Brittany Gaston led the Mountaineers from the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Six players posted one hit each for ASU.
Elon returns to action on Saturday, April 14 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Georgia Southern at East Field.
